2007-08 Service Opportunities
Doing service (volunteering) feels great and is a wonderful way to give back to the community and to show thanks for the good in our lives. More and more, Westlake Girls' Lacrosse wants to offer players opportunities to serve not only the Westlake community but our community at large.
Of course, there is also a wealth of service opportunities listed on the Chaps Inservice webpage.
If you're about to volunteer and would like service hours credit, go to the bottom of this page for more info on how to do that.
Sammy's House - Nov 10, 2007
Here is a service opportunity -- one in which we can go outside of our team, our school, and our Westlake community to offer some willing hands to an organization in Austin that really needs it. Sammy's House www.SammysHouse.org is a child development center for children who are "medically fragile" and/or developmentally delayed.
They offer daily care, respite care, and a therapy equipment loaning program. The idea was born when a baby named Sammy Huerta, after a 10-month struggle, succumbed to the heart defect that he was born with. His parents began this program to serve the needs of children like Sammy.
They would love for members of our team to come to their facility on a Saturday and do various types of projects from cutting and coloring, painting, sorting and organizing toys in the gym, to working on the playground. Isabel Huerta is the director, and she said projects might vary depending on when we come, but that she'll try her best to make sure everyone gets to do something they enjoy.
We're looking at going for three to four hours on Saturday, November 10. If you're interested in participating, please RSVP asap to Susan Nowstrup at snowstrup@austin.rr.com. If Nov 10 does not work for you, but you'd like to volunteer another time in the future, please let Susan know that as well.
Cool Campus Committee (Campus Beautification) - ongoing
Did you know our lacrosse group is maintaining the landscape area near the "real" ("old") WHS entrance? There's a lot of construction going on there, so maybe you haven't seen it. Several players met this summer and helped to weed the area and plant Texas-hardy plants.
Now the area needs watering once a week (if no rain), plus weeding once every 6 weeks or so. Right now, it needs weeding! The easiest and funnest thing to do is to get 3-4 of your friends together and agree on a day and time (2 hours needed, probably) you can all come; then contact Suzanne Doughty at suzanne_doughty@hotmail.com and she will help make it happen.
Thank you, car wash volunteers!
Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked so hard, and to Doug English, who organized our team's entire involvement from start to finish, and to Frank Kaplan, who handed Doug the reins from his capable hands last year, and to those die-hard parents who stayed the whole day on October 20. Y'all are truly an inspiration to the team! Everyone's hard work will benefit our team and enable us to cover costs such as new equipment that our registration dues do not cover.
Thank you, concession stand volunteers!
Thanks to the 20 or so volunteers who set up and ran the concession stand on Friday, Sept 28. It was a super-busy evening, with lots of hard work on your part and lots of eating on the fans' part! Thank you for contributing your time and energy. Your efforts will benefit the WHS PTO and our own club.
Getting "service hours" for volunteer work
Most students want the service hours credit for doing volunteer work. Here are the steps:
- Before volunteering, print out Community Service Verification Form. Bring it with you when volunteering, and before you leave, get it signed by the adult in charge of the project.
- After volunteering, go to this ChapService link to submit the info online.
- Make a copy of your form for your records.
- Turn the original form in at the AP's office.
- After a few days, verify that your hours have been certified on this other ChapService link.
Thank you, Susan Nowstrup, for this helpful summary!
